Canada Hefei No. 1 Secondary School (CHSS) operates on the campus of Hefei No. 1 High School. The student population of the parent school is about 7000. CHSS, a British Columbia Ministry of Education certified school, opened in September, 2011 and was granted certification in 2012. The 2016-17 enrollment is over 230 students in grades 10 to 12.

Hefei No. 1 High School is located about 10 km from the city centre. The area is quite new and exists because of Hefei No. 1 and a junior school next door, with a total student population of about 10,000. The area boasts expansive streets, relatively little traffic, many new high rise apartment buildings, and all necessary amenities nearby. A good-sized shopping mall with a large supermarket, banks, restaurants, and many shops is within walking distance of the school. The housing available to teachers is quite new and of a very acceptable standard from a Westerners point of view.

Teachers generally walk or bike to and from school. Transportation to the downtown core is easy by bus or taxi; a 20 – 30 minute trip. Many nearby cities, including Shanghai, are accessible by fast train and the airport is only 20 minutes from the school. The city of Nanjing, about an hour away by train, makes an interesting weekend destination. Other possible weekend destinations are Wuhu on the Yangtze River, and a hot springs resort that is a short bus trip away.

The Hefei No.1 High School campus covers an area of 54,000 square meters. The school has a population of 7000 students and 400 teachers. Many students are housed on campus in one of seven 15-story dormitories. The campus has a stadium, track, and gymnasium facility as well as various science and computer labs. Also on campus are 2 student dining halls, 1 staff dining hall, a bookstore, a small supermarket, and a medical clinic.

Canada Hefei No. 1 Secondary School: CHSS is housed on the 5th floor of the International Building. Each classroom in equipped with an instructional computer, projector and document reader. The school has a 32-station computer lab, a small BC library, and various offices for teachers and support staff. Teachers are provided with office work space, laptop computers and access to printers and a photocopier. CHSS also has access to various science labs and sports facilities.

CHSS is fully supplied with BC textbooks and teacher resources for all subjects taught, along with a small professional library. Teachers are encouraged to also make use of resources available on the internet and to bring favourite resources with them.
